Raw material for the production of vinyl acetate monomer, acetic anhydride and the acetate esters, such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and iso-propyl acetate (used to manufacture coatings, adhesives, inks and cosmetics). Also a key raw material in the production of purified terephthalic acid, as well as monochloroacetic acid.
Used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate, mainly used in soft drink bottles; cellulose acetate, mainly for photographic film; and polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, as well as synthetic fibers and fabrics; fungicide; used in cleaning products to remove calcium deposits left by hard water; descaling agent. In the food industry acetic acid is used under the food additive code E260 as an acidity regulator; used to preserve foods such as pickles. It also provides the sour taste for salad dressings and mayonnaise.
